This can be used for outlines or to give a different texture to an area. Come up at 1 and take your needle back down as close to 1 as possible. Pull the thread through part way, leaving a long-ish loop in the surface of the fabric. Bring your needle up at 2 and catch the loop as you pull the rest of the thread through. Leave a little flexibility in the thread to give the chain some shape. Take your needle down as close to 2 as possible, leaving a loop on the top of the fabric and bring it up again at 3, catching the loop on the needle and pull the thread through. Continue in this way until your chain is the length you want, make one final loop on the surface of the fabric, bring the needle up inside it and then stitch back down close to where you came up, catching the loop in a small stitch to hold it in place.
