Knitting in the Pumpkin Season

Updated: Oct 23, 2023

Knitting a hat for this time of year is a great idea. Now the days are getting a bit chillier, all of a sudden we need something to keep us a bit warmer.

How about a simple knitted hat?

How about a pumpkin?

I thought I would knit Amélie a new pumpkin hat. It's been a while, and she's been growing! I think her hat is getting a little small these days. It still looks good, so I'll pass the old one along, I love it when old knits get a new lease of life.

Knit along

If you have a pumpkin loving kid in your life, or you fancy one for yourself, get those needles out and find some yarn. You can knit along with me in real time, or pick up these posts anytime to create your own pumpkin patch!

Supplies

So we will need some orange, a sort of pumpkin slightly dusky kind of orange. I'm going to use Cascade 220 Aran weight in a colour called 'Jack o Lantern' - perfect! And for the green leaves at the top, I have some 'Highland Green' left over from another project. I think it will look great with the 'Jack o Lantern'. I don't need too much of either to knit this lovely little hat, 50g would be plenty, but I have to order the orange and it only comes in 100g balls. Maybe, I'll have to knit 2 hats! For the Aran weight yarn, 5mm needles will be about right. Circular, of course, I knit EVERYTHING on circular needles these days, and a hat, of course, must be in the round.

Possibilities

What do you do when you have to purchase twice the yarn that you actually need? - I could resent the additional cost, but somehow I always convince myself that I will use the extra yarn for something else. And sometimes I do! After all I do knit a LOT, but all too often the additional yarn will sit on the shelf for quite some time before it finds another purpose. But then it gives me great pleasure to have it sitting on that shelf. Just knowing that the yarn is there can bring a feeling of joyous possibilities - what could it be? Who might it be for? How happy would someone be to receive it? What project could I embark upon to learn a new skill with this yarn? Whatever happens, it will be a joyful experience.

Pattern

Well, this is a relatively simple knit and we could just freestyle it? Have a go if you want to - what's the worst that could happen? If you don't like the result, just pull it back and have another go. You haven't wasted the yearn, just got to enjoy knitting with it TWICE! I am going to use my own pumpkin hat pattern for this (if you want to use it too - have a look for it in the SHOP). I want to use the chart that shows the colour transitions to create the leaves at the top. Or seek out your own pumpkin pattern. Post your ideas, and let's see what everyone is up to. We'll just knit hats together, they don't all have to be the same.

Get ready, we'll get going in a day or so. I'm waiting for my orange yarn to arrive.
